Grieving

Manolis Aligizakis

In your mind
all night long sleepless
promised to go, not to cry

arrange flowers
in plastic vase
fill it with water
from cemetery fountain

promised to go, not to cry
like that first time

in the school yard
he squeezed your fingers
grade one

emotional defeat for
the strong grip of the boy
you fell in love and married

how often you suppose to visit
beloved’s grave-site

bringing tales of laughter
never a single sad story?
