Manolis Aligizakis

He sauntered by the ancient grounds
sold to yellow haired tourists

took notice of the innumerable dead
under the soil and above it

hard to discern some from others
then suddenly he stopped

he pointed to the busy agora
where everything was for sale

he made a certain gesture
as though erasing the whole image
as though erasing a mistake from his school essay

saying I want to plough
this ground all over and sow
the new crop of idealists

the ones standing motionless
inside these gleaming statues
