Manolis Aligizakis

Anywhere I go I carry him along
that my soles firmly attached
to gravity and earth’s bosom

I carry my death along
to John’s birthday party
and to Kostas and Helen’s wedding

in fact during Anthony’s eulogy
he stood up and said a few good words
what one can say in a funeral

and when at the cemetery
visiting my grave he is with me
making sure my name is clearly written

on the small marble sign really
you don’t need say too much
about death after all you know

death is always death that even
if you call him your relative
he will still come at the appropriate

moment to claim you no matter
how often you try to coax him
